Edmonton And Northern Alberta Chapter Message

posted Oct 18, 2011, 8:15 PM by Web Master

Hello Colleagues,

Does summer seem like a past memory?  For me, the sure sign of impending winter is the conclusion of the ASIS International Seminar and Exhibits, and this year in Orlando it was a fantastic event.  Canada Night in particular was very well delivered and it was great to see many of my fellow Edmonton chapter members there. Funny, I never saw any of them after that.....it was certainly a "good" night....

Speaking of our fine chapter, the term of many of our executive leadership is coming to a close. This includes myself as Chapter Chair. Several members of the team have also expressed their intentions to leave their positions so this November election will be "wide-open".  I encourage our membership to look seriously toward seeking a leadership role in our chapter. I especially encourage those of you that are "Young Professionals" in our industry looking toward a fruitful and rewarding career. Please consider the following. ASIS International membership and volunteer participation has been (and still is) one of the best things to have happened in my professional life. Most of my dearest local and international friends I met through ASIS. I directly contribute my local, regional and international business success to collaboration through ASIS. I also credit the Society for guiding me through my younger years in this industry to where I am today.

To the more senior members of our chapter, I challenge you to stay involved and mentor our young professionals.  I encourage you to provide for them the wisdom of your experience and wealth of your knowledge. You know, I have the utmost feeling of satisfaction and fullfillment for returning to a local leadership role. It has been fabulously rewarding. Working with the hardworking, professional and committed team on the executive has been outstanding, and I thank each one of them for that pleasure.

This is a tremendous opportunity to step forward and contribute directly to professional security management development and recognition in Edmonton, Alberta and Canada. I encourage you to seriously look toward helping our chapter continue to grow and prosper.

You will all be hearing from our 2011 Elections Chair, Mr. Tim McCrieght, CPP, CISSP in the next few weeks. Please consider participating in the adventure.

Finally, thank you all for your support and contributions toward making Edmonton and Northern Alberta an outstanding chapter.  We're copied by many and envied by more.

Regards - Dennis

Welcome back from summer! (...and Qadhafi is still on the run...)

Hello Colleagues,

Another exciting Alberta summer passes and we're back to the routine of "The Rest of the Year".  Your hard-working ASIS Executive has been busy this summer, actively planning upcoming events. Here are some "things" we've been working on:

1.    Ft. McMurray ASIS Workshop generously sponsored by CONTAVA is September 12. “Security Data Analysis and Managing Risk” – It’s all part of the security management process”, is two separate workshops at the Sawridge Inn and Convention Centre.  The morning workshop is 0900 − 1200 and the afternoon runs 1300 − 1600.  Refreshments will be served at each workshop. The workshop facilitator is Mr. Phill Banks, P.Eng., CPP of Vancouver's Banks Group. It is a treat to have him do this.  The cost for the workshop is:

                $75.00 for ASIS members

                $100.00 for non ASIS members.

Registration can be done through the Edmonton ASIS chapter website at: www.asisedmonton.com/

2.    The Chapter also is planning the CPTED II Planning Workshop for November 14 - 17, 2011. William VanRyswyk, CPP of Security Through Safe Design Inc in Ottawa will facilitate the workshop. We will offer some great deals on registration and more details will be available soon on the website.

3.   We have a winner!  Dean Sydlowski, CPP our Chapter Vice Chair is the lucky recepient of the 2011 ASIS Annual Seminar and Exhibits Complimentary Registration – Congratulations Dean!

4.    Our friends at Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security (ASSIST Unit) have been busy planning their annual workshop for October. This year is their third annual counter terrorism seminal on October 6th, 2011.  In addition to entire day of thought provoking and insightful speakers, attendees will be amongst the hundreds of other professionals dedicated in protecting critical infrastructure.  For more information and to register, please visit: http://www.regonline.ca/cts2011

5.    Soon, every morning you will be bundling up your “little’uns” watching them shuffle off to school and you begin to think:, “I miss that, why can’t I go to school too?” Well folks, it is that time again and our friends at the University of Calgary have an excellent selection of programs available for online learning and all of them providing credit towards a certificate in security management. The link below will provide a quick look at the 2011 and 2012 upcoming courses available online starting this fall.  ASIS International and the University of Calgary Continuing Education Faculty are partnered in offering these courses.  Remember, they offer credit toward a Security Management Certificate. Visit: http://conted.ucalgary.ca/security/schedule.jsp

More information can also be obtained by calling Continuing Education at 403-220-2866.

(Qatar). Your’s truly, Dennis Shepp, CPP is posted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with SNC-Lavalin on the KAPSARC Project (www.kapsarc.org).   Let us know if you have any changes you want to share with the membership.

Canada Night is September 18 at NASCAR Sports Grille, Universal City Walk, Orlando starting at 1800. ASIS Edmonton September Luncheon

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Edmonton, Petroleum Club

Meet and Greet: 1130 - 1200
Luncheon:           1200

Speaker:   Donald Bourne
                 Director, Regional Special Response Team
                 Canadian Red Cross

Topic:        Responding to the Alberta Wildfires in May 2011

Donald served for 23 years in the Canadian Military. He served in many functions and positions over that time, including United Nations missions in Cyprus and Cambodia.

In 1998 Donald started volunteering for the Canadian Red Cross in Disaster management. Since then Donald has been on several Canadian Red Cross missions both in Canada and International. In addition, Donald was an official delegate for five missions with the International Committee of the Red Cross in various countries involved, and several short term assignments to other countries from 1999 to 2005. Donald completed missions in Angola, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Iran and West Darfur in Sudan, all areas experiencing armed conflict at the time.

Donald spent 14 weeks with the Canadian Red Cross in the Tsunami affected area in Banda Ache, Indonesia, including Christmas 2006, working in the countryside, including on the island of Nias, as the CRC moves forward in providing permanent housing for the victims of the disaster. He has completed several short missions with the CRC in Haiti after the earthquake that devastated the island in January 2010. He is managing the Slave Lake and surrounding communities’ wildfire disaster as they move forward into recovery, as well as managing the generous donations that Canadians gave to the CRC for its operations.

Mosquito ALERT!

posted Jul 23, 2011, 12:36 PM by Web Master

Greeting Colleagues from the other side of the globe,

I've been in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for 3-weeks now and so far enjoying the project.  I hope to see many of you at the ASIS Annual Conference in Orlando in September where we can "catch up over some adult refreshments."

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, notwithstanding the mosquito invasion I am told has infested Edmonton. I want to congratulate our very own Dale Yushchyshyn, CPP, the long-term Chair of our Professional Certifications Programs in Edmonton. He has recently been awarded the Regional Certification Award from ASIS International HQ and the Professional Certification Board. Dale will be recognized at this year's conference in Orlando for his years of committed dedication toward the successful delivery of professional certification programs in Edmonton. Many of you probably don't realize that through Dale's efforts, Edmonton has been a regional leader of CPP Review Programs. For example, when I was first overseas in Doha, Qatar and looking to develop a CPP and PCI Review, Dale came forward and shared the success of the Edmonton program by providing everything I needed to launch a similar program in Qatar. Our success there was a direct result of Dale and his team's success in Edmonton. There are many more examples like this across Canada and around the globe.

Dale, on behalf of the Chapter and myself personally, please accept our gratitude and sincere congratulations on an award well-deserved.

Keep up the fantastic work and leadership!

Sincerely,
--

Summer's "Finally Here"

posted Jun 26, 2011, 9:59 AM by Web Master

The annual golf tourney was a terrific success, by all accounts of those who participated. Albeit smaller attendance, everyone I spoke with had a wonderful time. I unfortunately missed it due to business meetings scheduled late in Toronto, so by the time I returned home, a few "happy" golfers had found my "stash of adult beverages" and enjoying themselves.

Our next meeting is not until September, so here are a few announcements:
  1. Geoff Frisby, CPP reported the CPTED Workshop was a great success and the plans are underway for CPTED II this fall. Geoff is seeking volunteers to help on his planning committee for CPTED II (5-days November 2011) and Open Source Internet Research (1-day February 2012). Please contact Geoff directly at gfrisby@shaw.ca or (780) 915-2681. Thanks Geoff, Leo Edlund,CPP and Tim McCreight,CPP for helping out on CPTED I.
  2. We have a corporate sponsor who is willing to support an ASIS 1/2 to 1-day workshop in Ft McMurray this Fall. CONTAVA has offered, at no cost (or minimal) to attendees, to have a renown instructor present a physical security workshop the day following the Oilsands Show in Ft. McMurray. The chapter executive is seeking interest - please direct your expression of interest to attend by sending an email to me within the next 2-weeks (dennis@asisedmonton.com).
  3. We are ready to proceed with the mentorship program and Jeff Sieben, CPP has offered to coordinate the program. Please direct your interest as a mentor or protege tojeff.sieben@ppm2000.com
  4. CIPS Inc.  is sponsoring an Israeli Counter Terrorism Course: August 22-26, 2011 (details at www.cipscanada.com) and ASIS members can receive a 10% discount off the $750 registration fee.  When registering the discount code is ASIS.
  5. Finally, I am going to be away for the next few months on a special project in Saudi Arabia so Dean Sydlowski, CPP, the Chapter Vice Chairman and the rest of the executive team will be "carrying the torch" until elections this November. I accepted a position as a Director of Security Projects with SNC-Lavalin working on the KAPSARC (www.kapsarc.org) project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I still hope to see many of you in Orlando for the annual conference and will be keeping St Albert as home returning regularly to annoy my wife and family (...as well as many of you...) Thanks for everyone's kind wishes, support and contributions toward making Edmonton and Northern Alberta Chapter of ASIS International one of the BEST in the world. I will always remain a proud member of this chapter.
Don't think this means you won't be hearing from me, I am not all the way across the globe, only 1/2 way!

Cheers all!

Hello Colleagues,

Well look at what happened in the span of less than a week....we elected Canada's 41st government, (a Conservative majority - wow), located and "sanctioned" Osama Bin Laden, witnessed Will and Kate's "nuptials" and didn't get snow when Calgary did!  If this pace continues, May 2011 will be outstanding!
Our next luncheon is a week earlier this month (May 18) and will feature Stephan Contre speaking about daily crime forecasting. The date change is to accommodate Calgary's Trilateral Security Canada West Conference and Exhibition (see note below).

Here is some additional chapter news:

  2. We are looking at launching a Peer Mentorship Program.  The program has two objectives: demonstrate professional commitment to the security industry with this coaching initiative; and to provide support and assistance to young security professionals to overcome potential barriers in their careers. Are you interested in working toward a program of this nature in Edmonton? Please express your interest: dennis@asisedmonton.com
  3. CPTED Certified Level 1 Workshop: June 13 to 17, 2011 is now FULL. If you want to attend, please place your name on a waiting list - contact gfrisby@shaw.ca.  This workshop is sponsored by an educational grant from CONTAVA keeping the cost for chapter members to a phenomenal $375!

April Showers and Spring Flowers......ASIS Luncheon Meeting - April 27, 2011

posted Mar 28, 2011, 11:11 AM by Web Master

        Hello Colleagues,

"Where are the Spring flowers???" CTV News Edmonton currently has a contest to predict the date the city's "snow mountain" will have completely melted. I think our chapter contest should be what will happen first, the melting of snow-mountain or the annual golf tournament in June? Notwithstanding, this is Edmonton where we are used to 8 months of winter and another 4 months of "bad skiing"!

Dave Maze did a great presentation last week on the impact of organized crime on cargo theft in Alberta. CISA could use our help  toward actively combatting these issues with a coordinated strategy. If any ASIS members are interested in working on a committee with the CISA, please let me know.

Our next luncheon will feature our very own Peter Lemieux outlining Alberta's counter terrorism program through ASSIST. (More details are written below)

This unquestionably can refer to more than Edmonton's weather.  February 2011 will be remembered as the "Month of International Revolutions". Many of you with international responsibilities, especially with Middle East interests are pretty busy. Even ASIS International was impacted, the day before the Annual Middle East Conference was scheduled to begin in Manama, BAHRAIN, the border crossing was closed between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain stopping the majority of delegates from there attending. I was in communication with Russ Fermaniuk, CPP (former EPS and Edmonton Chapter member who now works in Qatar). Russ was staying in Bahrain ahead of the conference and was experiencing the excitement "first hand". This was his first ASIS conference, hopefully future conferences will not have this many hassles. Russ is now safely back in Qatar.

Here is what else is new with the chapter:
